The Appalachian Trail is the world’s longest hiking-only trail. The idea for the trail was introduced in 1921 and it was completed in 1937. Improvements were made over the years, and in 1968, the trail became one of the first National Scenic Trails (along with the Pacific Crest Trail). Today, over three million people hike portions of the Appalachian Trail every year.
