Americans have a deep love for their pets—in 2015 alone, more than $60 billion was spent on their purchase and care. Across the United States, over 312 million dogs, cats, birds, horses, fish, reptiles, and other small animals are cherished as pets and companions.
While many people adopt pets for companionship, the benefits go far beyond emotional connection. Research shows that pet ownership can help lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and even strengthen the immune system. Interestingly, a growing number of studies suggest that children raised in homes with furred animals are less likely to develop allergies and asthma.
For individuals with Alzheimer's disease or dementia, the presence of pets in the home can reduce agitation and emotional outbursts. Children with autism or learning disorders also tend to engage more readily with animals, creating opportunities to build social bridges with humans. Dogs, in particular, have proven effective in calming hyperactivity, reducing aggression, and stimulating creativity and imagination.
